A wrong quote in electroplating: what it really costs you

The tricky thing about a pricing mistake is that it doesn't show. The part comes out fine, the customer pays, you're happy. The margin that slipped away, on the other hand, you'll never see on any document.

Let's talk owner to owner. When a wrong quote in electroplating makes you lose money, the worst part isn't the amount. It's that you don't notice. The batch goes into the tank, comes out with the right thickness, the customer picks it up and pays the invoice without a word. Everything looks like it went well. And in a way it did: the work is done properly. It's just that the margin you thought you had put in the quote, in part, wasn't there. It was gone before you even switched on the rectifier.

Why a wrong quote leaves no trace

A mistake in production you can see. A scrapped part, a bath that won't pull, a late delivery: these things shout. A quoting mistake, on the other hand, is silent. It sets off no alarm, shows up in no report, nobody calls you to complain. Simply, at the end of the year the books add up a little less than you expected, and you can't put your finger on where.

The reason is that the price of an electroplating treatment comes from a chain of variables that aren't right in front of your eyes. There's the physics of the deposit, which ties the amount of metal to the surface area, the thickness and a property of the metal itself. There's the price of precious metals, which changes while you sleep. There's the energy, the labor, the number of parts in the batch. Get one of these steps wrong, even slightly, and the final number is off. But the final number, on its own, always looks reasonable. Nobody looking at a quote can tell by eye whether it's right or not.

Every batch is a bet

Here's the part that stings: it's not a mistake you make once and correct. It's a risk that comes back to you with every single quote. Every time you prepare a quote you're making, without knowing it, a bet on that chain of variables. If it goes well, you pocket the full margin. If one link has shifted (the metal has gone up, the deposit coefficient is the wrong one, you keyed in one figure instead of another) you pocket less, and you don't know it.

On a single batch, the difference can look like next to nothing. But you don't run one batch a year. You run them by the dozen, by the hundred. And the error, when it's structural, isn't random: it always tends to push in the same direction. Homemade spreadsheets, for example, tend to underprice precious metals, because the physical coefficient tied to the metal's density is easy to get wrong and, once you get it wrong, the price comes out lower than it should. Not higher. Lower. That means every gold plating, every platinum, every palladium you quote this way hands a slice of margin to the customer. Every time. On all of them.

The compound effect you don't see

Try to picture not the single part but the whole year. Lots of tiny slivers of margin, each one invisible, each one perfectly justifiable, adding up batch after batch. None of them, taken on its own, would make you raise an eyebrow. All together they become a figure that weighs.

It's the same mechanism by which a small leak in a plant doesn't show on the gauge but, at the end of the month, shows up on the bill. A single pricing error may be worth little. But recurring risk, multiplied by a year's workload, ends up worth orders of magnitude more. To put it plainly: the difference a single badly quoted batch takes away from you can, in some cases, weigh as much as a serious tool would cost you for an entire year. And that's just one batch. Imagine the whole season.

The paradox is that you don't lose this money on a job done badly. You lose it on a job done superbly, sold below cost without meaning to. It's the kind of loss that stings the most, because you don't even have the satisfaction of having saved on quality.

It's not the operator's fault

The temptation, when you realize something isn't adding up, is to look for who's responsible. Who made the quote? Who keyed in the number? Stop for a moment, because that's the wrong question. Your operator, or you yourself when you put together a quote in a rush between a phone call and a customer waiting, has no reliable way of knowing whether that number is right.

Not because they're careless or unskilled. Because the task is objectively hard. Keeping in your head the physics of the deposit, the up-to-date price of every precious metal at the right moment, the multi-layer thicknesses, the energy, the labor, and never getting a figure wrong, on every quote, every single day: that's a job for a machine, not a person. Asking a person to do it by hand means accepting that every now and then something will slip. It's not an if, it's a when.

That's why the problem is structural, not individual. A wrong quote in an electroplating shop isn't the symptom of an operator to replace: it's the symptom of a method that asks a person to play the part a tool should be playing. As long as the math stays by hand or on a homemade spreadsheet, you're placing the same bet on every batch, and every now and then you lose it without even noticing.
